Staying true to the university’s nickname, the La Salle Explorers explored different mascot options instead of the original, French explorer-inspired character. In 1962, for example, La Salle capitalized on the burgeoning Space Race, and experimented with an Explorer of the final frontier – an astronaut known as “The Explorernaut.” The Explaurernaut, like this version we found on a 1972 basketball program, remains a cult favorite among La Salle fans who know the school’s history.
